Save on Gas and Auto

Your Car

  • Pay off your car and keep it for a while.
  • If you do finance, think about buying used if you have a reputable mechanic that could do a check-up on a car you’re considering.
  • Consider trying to save money with some of the auto insurers by using their dongle devices that analyze your driving patterns.
  • Check Consumer Reports, which you can often find at your local Library (or through your local library online via Zinio or some other online magazine site!). Consumer Reports will rate many details that factor into the cost of owning a car over time.

Car Maintenance

  • Get your car painted by a technical college for cheaper than an auto store.
  • Learn how to do the simple things like oil changes.
  • Look for coupons in the mail or online for oil changes and maintenance.
  • Try to get referrals for where you choose to take your car for service.
  • Be sure to have the factory service done on time so that you don’t void your warranty.

Extended Warranty

  • Remember that the price for extended warranties are negotiable.
  • If you opt for an extended warranty, be sure to try to get a zero dollar deductible on any repairs.
  • If you do opt for an extended warranty, don’t forget you have it! Also, most of the time, refunds for these warranties are given on a pro-rated (not short-rated) basis so be sure to request cancellation if you sell your vehicle.

Making Money

  • There are various services available where you may drive patrons and make money for this, but be sure to check them out and that you feel comfortable doing this. It would be good to double check with your insurance company that this type of use of the vehicle is covered (they may want to charge you a business use rate for the insurance?)
  • Look into ‘wraps’, if you have a newer car, some companies will pay you to advertise on your car for them.

Save on Gas and Wear and Tear

  • Drive conservatively to save gas.
  • Group your errands.
  • Drive at alternate times from when there is heavy traffic.
  • Be safe, don’t speed, avoid tickets.
  • Consider using one of those dongles in your car from the insurance company (again, if you feel comfortable) to see if your driving behavior and patterns merit a discount from them.
  • Don’t carry excess weight in your car that may drag down your mileage.
  • Keep your car clean and organized to help other facets of your life (being able to find that receipt you need, eating better because you choose to not eat in your car, a better resale value of your car).

Don’t Drive if it isn’t Necessary

  • Consider walking or public transportation if possible and not too much of an inconvenience.
  • Carpool with friends to events, concerts, weddings, and even to lunch.  Be sure to take turns with your friends so you’re not the taker in the relationship!
  • Shop online and request free shipping (or look for a coupon/promo code).
  • Deposit checks online (if you feel comfortable with this).
  • Don’t carry excess weight in your car that may drag down your mileage.
  • Keep your car clean and organized to help other facets of your life (being able to find that receipt you need, eating better because you choose to not eat in your car, a better resale value of your car).
