Age Appropriate Tasks and Chores

The following are suggestions for age appropriate chores and tasks for children.  You will be the best judge of your child’s ability and understanding of the tasks at hand to make adjustments as they develop.

General Tips

  • Demonstrate how to do chores.
  • Don’t make it a punishment.
  • Try to make it fun.
  • Lead by example.
  • Set them up for success, try to show them how to do things and set them up to be clear and simple at first.

Age Appropriate Chores/Tasks

Up to Two Years

  • Sort laundry
  • Empty small trash cans
  • Light dusting (with old socks)
  • Pair up socks
  • Bring up the mail and newspapers
  • Place dirty clothes in hampers
  • Put away the silverware and utensils
  • Put toys away/Clean up (sing a song, make it fun)
  • Clean with wipes

Two to Five Years

  • Tasks on the younger list
  • Make bed
  • Help younger children
  • Load and put away dishes
  • Water plants
  • Hold the dustpan
  • Sweep with a small broom
  • Put away laundry
  • Vacuum crumbs with handheld cleaner
  • Set table

Five to Preteen

  • Tasks on the other lists
  • Do laundry
  • Help younger family members
  • Sweep the floors
  • Keep room clean
  • Tend to the animals
  • Clear the table
  • Do the dishes

Preteen to Adult

  • Tasks on the other lists
  • Sort and do laundry
  • Vacuum the house
  • Help with computer tasks
  • Clean counters
  • Wash windows
  • Clean the fridge
  • Help with cooking (this helps them out in life!)
  • Help the rest of the family
  • Clean the kitchen
  • Tidy up the bathroom
  • Help in the yard
  • Sweep and mop
A little less dishes can help a lot over time
